Over the next two weeks, the Council’s plans for allocating housing at a number of sites across the city will be scrutinised by a Planning Inspector.

CPRE will be leading a final push to save a number of the proposed locations that are valuable community green spaces, such as East Minchery Farm allotments and the Horspath site which is within the Green Belt.

Sietske Boeles, Chair of CPRE Oxford, said: “Our recent Lost Landscapes art exhibition featured many of the threatened sites and we were overwhelmed by the response from local people. There is clearly a strong sense of connection to these green spaces and residents value them enormously.

“Both national planning policy and Oxford City's own Core Strategy indicate that open space should not be allocated for development unless there has been a proper assessment and it can be shown that it is not required by the local community. We believe that no such assessment has taken place and that therefore these sites should not be allocated.”

The Examination in Public of Oxford City Council’s Sites & Housing Development Plan Document began today and runs until Friday 21 September in Oxford Town Hall, St Aldate's, Oxford OX1 1BX. CPRE Oxford will raise its concerns at a number of the public hearings including the Sustainability & Design session on Friday 14th, and the Soundness of Sites Allocated in the SW and SE areas of Oxford on Wednesday 19th. More information.

CPRE will also be arguing against potential housing development on Ruskin Fields, at the Barton Area Action Plan Hearing on Friday 21 September. This is a site of ecological value which contributes to the character of the Old Headington Conservation Area. CPRE Oxford supports the City Council’s own preferred option that development on this site would not be appropriate.
