Plant a Tree for the Jubilee! The Queen’s Green Canopy in Oxfordshire

Thursday, 27 May 2021 12:57

The Queen’s Green Canopy is a major new tree planting campaign to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – the first ever for a British monarch.

It’s encouraging everyone from individuals to villages, schools, environmental groups, communities and companies to play their part to enhance our environment by planting trees from this October, when the tree planting season begins, through to the end of the Jubilee year in 2022.

With a focus on planting sustainably, the QGC will encourage planting of trees to create a legacy which will benefit future generations and commemorate the Queen’s 70 years on the throne. CPRE Oxfordshire are thinking about some projects of our own but would be happy to hear suggestions from any members, or to work together with any local businesses interested in getting involved.

The Queen’s Green Canopy is an inclusive national initiative, meaning that everyone from across the United Kingdom can get involved. Here in Oxfordshire we’re taking it very seriously because this county has a well below average tree cover.   So whether you’re an individual hoping to plant a single sapling in your garden, a group planting a large tree, a local community wanting an orchard open to everyone, or a town intending to plant a wood to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, this campaign is for you.

All trees and woodland planted as part of the Jubilee can be dedicated to the Queen’s Green Canopy and be marked on the national digital canopy map.   If so wished, the trees or woods can be officially named and identified with a plaque.

The planting of new trees can take the form of:

Individuals planting trees on their private land.

Platinum Jubilee Community Planting projects for youth organisations, environmental groups, parishes, or residents’ associations.

A Platinum Jubilee Avenue of medium-sized or large trees ideal for large estates, new housing developments or towns.

A Platinum Jubilee Copse on either public or private land.

A Platinum School Tree in the school grounds, or perhaps a small wood on nearby land made available by a neighbour.

Companies and businesses planting trees on their land or creating tree planting projects with employees.
