Exhibition of maps by Alun Jones

Thursday, 27 August 2015 14:31

An exhibition at Lincoln College this September offers a unique chance to see some of Alun Jones' wonderful hand-drawn maps of the Oxfordshire countryside.   Not to be missed!

Alun Jones has hand-drawn some 90 maps of Oxfordshire and its countryside over the past 50 years, mostly on behalf of CPRE. A selection of these will be on show this September in an exhibition in the Old Library Corridor at Lincoln College, Turl Street, Oxford.

The exhibition will include some of Alun’s maps of Oxfordshire towns and villages, historic houses and their gardens, and routes of long-distance walks and sponsored walks.  Together they provide a fascinating overview and valuable record of Oxfordshire's communities and landscapes.

Your special invitation:  Private View for CPRE members

From 4pm until 7pm on Thursday 10 September, the exhibition will be open for private viewing only by members of CPRE, the Oxford Preservation Trust, the Historic Gardens Society, and the Oxford Seminar on Cartography. Members should identify themselves at the Porters’ Lodge either by showing a membership card, or by asking for Christopher Hawgood, who is the organiser of the exhibition.

Public opening times

The exhibition will be open to the public from 11am (NB not 9am as previously stated) to 5pm on both 12 and 13 September, the Oxford Open Doors weekend.

CPRE Oxfordshire has been honoured to be the beneficiary of so much of Alun Jones' work over the years and is delighted that this exhibition will help bring it to the attention of the wider public.   We hope that it will be the first step to finding a long-term home for this incredible archive.
