The new chair of CPRE West Oxfordshire district committee is Gareth Hammond

Gareth Hammond was voted in as the new chair of CPRE West Oxfordshire district committee at the district AGM last weekend. Gareth takes over from Gill Salway whose long tenure in this post and 48 years as a CPRE member will be "a hard act to follow" Gareth says.

Gareth lives in Church Hanborough and has been a member of CPRE for 28 years. Gareth says:

"I am passionate about our countryside and want to do what I can to protect its unique qualities. You only have to go abroad to be reminded when you come back that English fields and hedgerows in an undulating landscape make this country such a great place to live. West Oxfordshire, with its picturesque Evenlode and Windrush valleys, is particularly attractive, although paradoxically it comes behind all other district and unitary authorities in the South East for accessible natural green space. If government is determined to sacrifice the rural environment on the altar of economic growth via lax planning laws, we all need to be vigilant. Otherwise our children and grandchildren will not thank us for the blight of urban sprawl."
