Housing & Eco Towns - Shipton on Cherwell

In 2007, in response to the Government’s eco-town programme, Kilbride Properties Ltd put in a bid for an 'eco-town' of 5-10,000 homes in Shipton-on-Cherwell quarry, a developed (old cement works) site to the north of Kidlington, Oxfordshire, within the Oxford Green Belt.
The developers hoped to transform the former cement works between Woodstock and Bicester into a thriving community. Its scheme would have included a new rail station, park-and-ride site, schools, shops, a marina and a nature reserve.
Kilbride Properties Ltd had already tried to get their scheme included in the County Structure Plan and again in the South East Plan. But both times the Inspectors threw it out.
On 3 April 2008, the shortlist of fifteen sites for the next phase of eco-town public consultations was announced and included Weston Otmoor and the proposed eco-development of 5,000 homes at North West Bicester. The proposed eco-town at Shipton on Cherwell was dropped from the list.
