Oxford's Green Belt - Northern Gateway
Oxford City Council together with Goodman, Kier Property and Merton College, plans to build a one hundred acre office and retail park: the 'Northern Gateway' between Wolvercote and Pear Tree in North Oxford. It is intended to provide space for 4,000 office workers, a large retail space and some housing.
The land owners who have entered into agreements with Kier and Goodman are St John's College, Oxford; Merton College, Oxford; Worcester College, Oxford and Oxford City Council itself.
The original boundary of the proposed development included common land in Wolvercote - Goose Green, listed and historic buildings, large parts of the Conservation Area of Wolvercote and Godstow and 42 private family houses, as well as two parcels of Green Belt land.

The plans and proposals that detail the Northern Gateway are part of Oxford City Council's Core Strategy.
CPRE Oxfordshire opposed the proposed Northern Gateway development at the Examination in Public on the Oxford Core Strategy, primarily on the grounds that it includes a piece of Green Belt land south of the A40 and in the north at Peartree Hill Farm. We see no justification or rationale for the City to take any Green Belt land.
CPRE Oxfordshire is also concerned about the traffic implications of the proposed development and the impact that it will have on the local Conservation Area. We are also concerned about the increase in jobs and the worsening of the jobs/housing balance in the City.
We set out CPRE's position on the Northern Gateway in our submission to the Examination in Public on Oxford's Core Strategy in June 2009.
