The Midcounties Co-operative is expected to shortly submit a planning application to build a 60 metre wind turbine near the Seacourt Park and Ride in Oxford.
In December 2008 it installed a 58m (approx. 200ft) test mast to investigate whether it would be feasible to construct an 850kw wind turbine to provide up to 75 per cent of power for the Society's Co-operative House headquarters, the neighbouring Motorworld garage and the Co-op store in Botley.
The mast was set to remain in place for the next 12 to 18 months and the findings of the test mast are soon to be made public.
CPRE Oxfordshire is concerned that the proposed turbine will damage Oxford's famous skyline. The proposed site also adjoins the Oxford Green Belt and as such we believe it is an inappropriate intrusion into Green Belt land.
