CPRE applauds action on roadside advertisements
by Cherwell District Council and ODPM

December 2005

Following a campaign by the Campaign to Protect Rural England, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister has announced new measures to clamp down on illegal roadside adverts. A new national database will be launched next year, containing information on companies who distract drivers and blight the countryside by advertising illegally beside motorways, and this will assist local planning authorities in enforcing the law.

One authority that has taken recent action is Cherwell District Council, which has succeeded in getting signs removed along the M40.

Andy Boddington of CPRE Oxfordshire says “We welcome the news that the government is at last taking action against these unsightly and unwelcome hoardings. We are very pleased that Cherwell has been active in getting signs in its area removed and urge other Oxfordshire District Councils to follow suit.”

Several advertisements still remain in Oxfordshire, especially on the M40 in South Oxfordshire.
