In Memory of Stephen Hart M.B.E.

1933-2006

We are sad to record the death of Stephen Hart after a short illness. Stephen was a long-time member of CPRE, and for a number of years chairman of Henley and Mapledurham District of CPRE. More recently he was agricultural advisor to the Oxfordshire Branch Executive Committee. Stephen was born at Hammond’s Farm at Checkendon in 1932, and lived and worked there for more than seventy years until he and Vanessa moved a short distance to their new home only a few months ago. From there he planned to farm both Hammond’s Farm and Woodhouse Farm at Ipsden, continuing the tradition of superb land management he inherited from his father. This approach, while embracing new farming systems, sought to sustain traditional rural values of what was right for the land and livestock, for the countryside and for the local community-values which closely match those of CPRE. One of Stephen’s remarkable skills was his ability to help others to make things happen, whether locally with his ‘countless years’ as a church warden at Checkendon, or in his huge range of other village activities. He was also Chairman of Oxfordshire Young Farmers Club, President of Nettlebed Farming, a fellow of the Royal Agricultural Societies, Chairman of the Environmental Committee of the National Sheep Association, and a committee member of the Family Farmers Association.

Stephen was founder of the South Oxfordshire Countryside Education Trust, which supports trained naturalist graduates to enthuse local primary school children with the beauty of the landscapes and wildlife around them. He was one of the founders of the infl uential Tenant Farmers Association and a founder member of the world-renowned Pig Improvement Company. He even found time to breed his own line of sheep: the Hartline. Stephen was awarded the MBE in 1972 in recognition of his campaigning as chairman of the remarkably successful Federation of Rabbit Clearance Societies. All this was combined with wise advice and warm friendship, which will be much missed by CPRE members, his friends and his family.
